The events of the "Montgomery Riverfront Brawl" on August 5, 2023 are extraordinary from a race-critical perspective and in a historical context. The brawl between white (party) boat guests, the Black co-captain and the Black people who came to his support received a great amount of media attention and became a cultural moment for Black people beyond the country's borders. Although it is also about questions of racially motivated violence, it is also about questions of forms of resistance and community among Black people. The Alabama River, which played a central role in the history of the transatlantic slave trade, potentiates the current events with its history and places this violent confrontation between white and Black people in a wider historical context.The folding chair, a symbol of this incident, stands for this moment of resistance and rebellion against white violence. My dedication to this object and my modification with almost 6,000 faux pearls is to be understood, among other aspects, as an homage to the uprising of August 5, 2023, as well as to the resistance and resistance of Black people since the beginning of the slave trade.
