me & mr. jones
Me & Mr. Jones is a personal, theoretical, and artistic examination of identity, origin and affiliation. It offers a political reflection on the complex changes of Black German identity over the last 70 years, and it is a negotiation of my lived experience as a black woman in Germany. Me & Mr. Jones consists of three elements with different foci: a photo book, a sound installation, and photographs on the wall. The book contains 114 photos and presents a conceptual narrative that builds on my family history and examines my autobiographical lines. The focus of the wall installation (12 images/objects) is narrowed down to a reflection on the meaning of a black identity. The sound installation consists of recordings of conversations I had with my African American family. The recorded spoken language, sounds, and laughter immerse the viewers and add an affective dimension.
